Feelings of happiness made in Schleswig-Holstein
What WALTERWERK GmbH & Co. KG has to do with ice cream cones
The company has been in existence for over 90 years. In its early days, the engineering firm focused on armaments, but after the war it switched to the production of industrial waffle baking machines. With great success. WALTERWERK Kiel GmbH & Co. KG exports its machines to over 80 countries and is the global market leader in its field. With its systems, the machine manufacturer meets the high demands of the food industry: industrial production, refinement, packaging and, above all, preservation of food.
The focus is on automation and energy efficiency. Manufacturers produce up to 100 million waffles per year on the machines of the company, which is picturesquely located directly on the North-East Sea Canal. The systems can be operated efficiently with electricity, even though most manufacturers currently still use gas. ‘It is important to us that our machines can be operated with green electricity wherever possible, which is why all our systems can be retrofitted from gas to electricity.’ emphasises Managing Director Andreas A. Eule. Electricity is produced and used from the photovoltaic system on the roof of the company's own production hall. ‘We only feed electricity into the grid at weekends,’ adds Eule.
Waffle baking machines cannot be bought online at the click of a mouse. The machines are individually tailored to the needs of the customer and can also be combined with dough mixing machines, packaging units and feeders. The processes are analysed and optimised together with the customers. Even small modifications can bring about significant increases in efficiency. ‘We particularly enjoy this part: when a change in the dough recipe saves 2 seconds of the total 60-second baking time or increases the breakage resistance. Less waste always means lower costs and greater sustainability,’ Eule is delighted. He sees his company as an important partner for food producers. He serves as a sparring partner, but above all, his experience in automation enables him to develop completely new ideas and implement them for industrial production.
In order to be well positioned for the future, WALTERWERK GmbH & Co. KG attaches great importance to the training and satisfaction of its employees. To ensure a high degree of planning reliability, the company has a high level of vertical integration. The few parts that are supplied come from Germany or other European countries, as short delivery routes reduce supply chain uncertainty and are much more sustainable. So that in future, people can continue to enjoy a little bit of Schleswig-Holstein happiness when they eat ice cream.
