Green and climate-friendly chemical production
Sustainable and climate-friendly operations powered by green and blue energy are not typically associated with chemical manufacturing. However, Oxytabs in Rendsburg is proving otherwise.
If you use cleaning tablets for xour coffee machine, chances are they come from Oxytabs. This family-owned business produces them right in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as at a second location in Germany. The company, now in its secons generation under the leadership of Anne Lie and Robert Vesterager, has been thriving for nearly 30 years. Oxytabs develops and manufactures cleaning and descaling products under private labels for well-known brands. "With 90 employees, we are currently one of Germany's leading production in this field," says Project Manager Thies Reick.
Climate-friendly operations, he explains, are central to product development, giving rise to the company motto "As much as necessary, as little as possible. Prioritising sustainable raw materials and eco-friendly products is at the heart of what we do. Our customers expect nothing less, and we also support them through ecological certification for their products," says Reick, adding that production on their massive machines meets the highest industry standards and all customer requirements. The rotary presses can produce tablets ranging in diameter from two to 60 millimetres - at a rate of up to 520,000 tablets per hour.
Oxytab's products are used widely in industrial, domestic and agriculture applications. The food industry, for example, uses its disinfection solutions for air-conditioning and cooling systems. "For livestock in agriculture, we produce high-quality nutritional supplements in tablet form, which comply with feed safety regulations," says Reick. And in households, the tablets from Rendsburg are used to clean coffee machines, dishwashers and washing machines.
According to Norbert Dix, Head of Energy Management sustainable energy production has long been ingrained in Oxytabs'DNA - well before the addition of the company's sixth production hall. "For 15 years, our combined heat and power plants have been supplying us with heat and "blue" energy. Our two solar installations, with capacities of 300 and 100 kilowatts, generate green energy," he explains. This setup enables the company to produce more power than it requires for its operations. "On weekends, our solar panels feed surplus electricity back into the grid. Overall, we operate with a net-zero carbon footprint."
Breyond climate-friendly operations and energy efficiency, Dix believes that energy security is vital for Oxytabs. "After witnessing the impact of the Ukraine war, we're confident in our decision to become more energy-independent. At present, we can cover about two-thirds of our electricity needs ourselves." He adds that a new battery installation will soon provide enhanced energy security. To conserve energy, all company buildings are optimally insulated, and power consumption iskept low through the use of LED lighting. Additionally, wastewater is reused, and employees are encouraged to use e-bikes provided by the company. "We meet our environmental responsibilities through sustainable practices and an optimal carbon footprint," says Thies Reick. Oxytabs' customers appreciate the company's numerous green credentials - and if it could, the planet would surely say "thank you", too.
