In addition to wind energy, Schleswig-Holstein is heavily promoting the expansion of other renewable energies, such as photovoltaics and biomass, particularly in rural areas. Some of the region's universities like Kiel, Heide, Flensburg and Lübeck offer together the highest proportion of industry-relevant courses for these sectors in Germany, leading to a high concentration of skilled professionals. Currently, there are over 17 degree programs focused on renewable energy, along with several apprenticeship opportunities, involving more than 100 trainees. In Germany's true North, Schleswig-Holstein continues to lead the charge in renewable energy generation. In 2022, the region produced an impressive 26.0 million MWh from renewable sources, covering its electricity consumption by an astounding 186%, according to the Nord Statistics Office. Building on this success, in 2023, more than 11.37 million MWh (+ 2 Mio MWh compared to previos year) were exported beyond the region's borders, as reported by Schleswig-Holstein Netz (SH Netz). Schleswig-Holstein is on track to become a European leader in the production, distribution, and utilization of green hydrogen. To fully harness its potential and accelerate the transition to economic applications, strong collaboration between government and industry is essential. In support of this vision, the Schleswig-Holstein State Coordination Office for the Hydrogen Economy has been established at WTSH GmbH, under the direction of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment, and Nature (MEKUN). Shaping the Energy Future of Schleswig-Holstein 

To meet the expected doubling of electricity demand by 2030—driven by the rise of e-mobility and heat pumps—Schleswig-Holstein is on track to triple its renewable energy generation capacity, increasing from 11,000 MW to 30,000 MW. This ambitious goal includes the construction of 120 new substations and nearly 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage lines, ensuring the region's energy supply remains reliable and efficient for the future. 
Looking ahead, the HanseWerk Group, a key player in the energy sector and operator of Schleswig-Holstein Netz, is set to invest over €2.8 billion by 2028. With a strong focus on upgrading and expanding heating and electricity networks, annual investments are set to rise from €400 million in 2023 to more than €700 million by 2028, marking the largest investment program in the company’s history.
