Schools

Primary schools

After four years at primary school pupils move on to either of two secondary level 1 schools, a comprehensive or a grammar school.

Comprehensive schools

Comprehensive schools enable pupils to acquire one of the two lower school certificates: the less demanding Hauptschulabschluss or the more demanding Realschulsabschluss. Many of the comprehensive schools in Schleswig-Holstein also have a sixth form where pupils can study for their higher school certificate (Abitur) in nine years.

Grammar schools

Most grammar schools in Schleswig-Holstein offer pupils an eight-year path to the higher school certificate (Abitur).

Vocational schools/colleges

The wide-ranging curricula of Schleswig-Holstein’s vocational colleges offer students a vocational qualification designed for a specific occupation, as well as giving them the chance to acquire a broad spectrum of school or college certificates:

  • Vocational schools
  • Vocational grammar schools
  • Technical secondary schools
  • Higher vocational schools
  • Vocational colleges
  • Technical colleges
